Fines and Fees Policy

To make sure the Worcester Public Library’s resources are safeguarded to be available to all library users at all times. When any library user violates the principle of sharing resources by retaining materials beyond the established limits, that person takes unfair advantage of the community as a whole.

1. Materials may be returned to any public library in Central Massachusetts. To encourage the prompt return of materials, the Library charges a per day overdue fine based on the type of item:
2. On the day after the due date, all materials will be considered overdue if they have not been renewed or returned.
3. No fines will accrue on days that the Library is closed.
4. Overdue notices are sent out via e‐mail or letter.
5. Thirty (30) days after the due date of an un‐returned item a bill is generated and will be mailed to the card holder. This replacement cost will appear on the patron record as well. If the patron returns the item after it is billed, only a small overdue fine will be charged.
6. Card holders with an account balance of more than $10 will lose their borrowing and renewing privileges until materials are returned and fines are paid. If a patron is experiencing unusual difficulty in paying for a lost item, please contact a Supervisor in the Circulation Department.
7. Patrons with fines and billed items on their records still have in‐library use privilege of the computers and the collection.

8. Card holders may pay online through their Library card account accessed through the Library catalog.
