About the Mobile Libraries
Since 1940, intermittent bookmobile services had been offered in the city of Worcester. These services played an important outreach role, connecting new users and raising awareness of library services throughout the city. In 1991, the services were discontinued. However, on Monday, June 4, 2012, the Worcester Public Library announced the official launch of its new Mobile Library Branch, Library Express (Libby).
This pilot program was initially launched with a used 1992 bookmobile. Due to the success of the program, an additional bookmobile “Lilly” was launched in January of 2014. In January of 2018, a new and improved “Libby” hit the road.
Libby brings improved reliability, increased headroom, and additional shelf space, which has allowed for expanded collections for all ages. The upgrade also houses three work stations for staff, staff printing capabilities, a seat for patrons, and windows to let in natural light. Libby's collection includes popular books, large print books, accelerated reading books, children’s award winners, DVDs, and much more.
Lilly, our second Mobile Library, contains books, audiobooks, and DVDs for preschoolers through teenagers, as well as storytime kits for parents and caregivers to borrow.
Mobile Library service is provided to patrons Monday through Friday, on a four-week schedule. Most items not found on the Mobile Libraries may be requested through the online catalog, and the requested items will be delivered to you at any of the Mobile Library stops. Both Mobile Libraries are ADA-compliant with wheelchair access.
In addition to the regular schedule, Libby and Lilly are often invited to attend special events throughout the city.
Please feel free to email the Mobile Library if you have any questions. Meanwhile, see our monthly Libby Schedule or Lilly Schedule.
